Cape Minstrels Carnival is one of the wonders of Cape Town, on the 2nd of January up to 13,000 people dance and sing there way from district six to the centre of Cape Towns business district (CBD). The partying continues through out most of January and is organised in part with the local government and the Kaapse Karnaval (Cape Carnival) Association. Most of the people have their faces painted in elaborate white and black patterns and wear bright outfits. The vast majority of the participants are Afrkiaans speaking people from the Cape coloured community.
The history of the carnival is that some time in the mid 1800's minstrels from the USA came to Cape Town. The American minstrels were white, but they had their faces painted black. In Cape Town the darker skinned locals would paint their faces white and then sing local songs to mock their former slave masters.
