Cape Town during the festive season is a completely different experience from anything in most of Europe or most of the northern hemisphere. In Cape Town, December is the first month of summer and tends to be very hot. Christmas 2007 in the southern suburb town of Muizenberg the tempreture hit 35C (95F)!
A typical Christmas day will start early, even if you dont bring the children, due to sun rise being around 5:45am. Christmas lunch/dinner, depending on where you eat, will normally be cold food whilst sitting in the sun. The meal might consist of cooked meats such as chicken, turkey, lamb or pork, salad and maybe potatoes. Whilst this may not seem very festive lets not forget it could be 90F out in the sun and hot food is not as desirable.
Its best to sit back and enjoy a change from the cold of a UK christmas. Most beaches tend to be very busy, but its well worth the trip as a dip in the ocean on Christmas day is a great feeling!
