Chapmans Peak is the name of a mountain that can be found on the western side of the Cape Peninsula, a road named Chapmans Peak drive hugs the mountain side and goes from Noordhoek to Hout Bay. The mountain side was dug out for the road between 1915 and 1922 and at the time was regarded as a huge engineering triumph. The road is a little over 9km in length and has 114 turns along the route.
The road is often closed as there are frequent rock falls which can be very dangerous, the road was closed during the 1990's due to the death of a person, from which a lawsuit followed.
The road is now a toll road, with the average car paying R24 (about £1.70) and a motorbike paying R16 (about £1). Even though there are dangers along Chapmans Peak Drive, the view is outstanding and is with out a doubt one of the beautiful drives in the world with plenty of places to stop and enjoy the view as well as dedicated picnic tables.
