Knysna is home to the world famous Knysna lagoon, the two wonderful elephant parks, the oyster festival, the Knysna forest and the Knysna heads. It's location ensures that it enjoys mild winters and warm hot summers.
Knsyna can be found in the heart of the garden route and is roughly a 6 hour drive along the straight N2 national road. The drive itself is very pleasent and easy due to the long straights and wonderful moutain and semi-dessert views. An early start is recommended (6am) if you drive from Cape Town as the road starts in the City of Cape Town and then takes you through the busy main road of Somerset West before you drive over Sir Lowry's Pass.
Knysna Oyster Festival
The Knysna lagoon is home to many oyster beds in preperation for the yearly oyster festival which normally takes place in the winter month of July. During the festival many events take place such as the Knysna Forest Marathon, the Knysna Cycle Tour, the many oyster eating and opening competitions, wine tasting and food tasting. There are also many other sporting and family activities.
Knysna Elephant Park
A visit to the Knysna elephant park will introduce you to the most southerly elephants in the world. At the park you are able to feed and walk with the elephants as well as ride on the back of some the full grown males, a truly amazing experience. The herd of elephants have a large park area with their own private forest and have the opportunity to sleep inside or outside. Meeting these animals up close is a truly humble experience.
Brenton on Sea
For the best and closest beach to Knysna a short trip to Brenton on Sea, roughly a 20 minute drive along the western head, should be taken. The white sandy beach goes on for many miles and eventually ends in Buffles Bay further up the west coast, which is also a great surf spot.
Knysna Waterfront
Knysna also has a small but busy water front area with many craft shops and antique knick knack shops dotted around. There are also many great restaurants in the area with possibley the best being JJ's - a beautiful restaurant with lots of character, atmosphere and excellent food.
