The beautiful but busy fishing town of Kalk Bay sits along side False Bay a short drive down the main road from St James and Muizenberg. There are two distinct areas, one is the small but vibrant fishing harbour and second is the shops and bars along the main road.
The fishing harbour has been active since 1806 where it began as a small fishing village and whaling station, since then there have been various storms that have threatened the harbour untill the creation of the current break water in 1919. The harbour wall is a prime spot for local and recreational fisherman to sit and cast a line, often on Saturdays and Sundays the wall is packed with no room for leisure walkers. 12 noon sees many of the fishing boats coming in to harbour to off load and sell their catch to the local restaurant and hotels in the area.
The harbour also has several restaurants which all serve the freshest fish (naturally), for 'real' fish and chips head to Kalkys which is directly in the harbour, a hang out for the fisherman, locals and tourists - this is a no frills restaurant with only wooden benches and no decor to speak of but probably the best quality fish in the southern suburbs (maybe Cape Town).
The shopping in Kalk Bay is made up of small second hand furniture shops, antique shops, clothes shops and varied restaurants. The main road area can get very busy late afternoon and through out the weekend. Be sure to adventure up the side roads for a truer experience of Kalk Bay.
After a day in Kalk Bay, head to the Brass Bell and try to secure a seat on the Bikini deck to enjoy wide sweeping views of False Bay while sipping on a cool beer and some fresh sea food.
