Kommetjie is a small suburb whose name means “small basin” in Afrikaans, its so named because there is evidence that people used this basin as a fish trap long ago.
One of the large attractions is the cast-iron Slangkop (snakes head) lighthouse which stands at 98ft. The lighthouse has been guiding ships pas these rocky shores since 1919 and has a light which flashes four times every 30 seconds.
Kommetjie is also famous for its long sandy beach which takes you all the way to Noordhoek, the white sandy beach stretches on for 8KM (5 miles).
The beach is perhaps more famous for its
surfing culture and history, as Long Beach (a small section of Kommetjie beach) is a well respected surf spot where a long left hand break can last up to 50 meters. The waters here are colder than False Bay and can be rough with wave heights often hitting 8ft.
