Table Mountain should be a definite destination on your to-do-list when planning your trip to Cape Town. This enchanting mountain has been a landmark for centuries, and getting to the top was looked upon as a goal set only by adventurers and explorers. Although today the view from the top is still one of the world's biggest tourist destinations, the climb is no longer sought after only by professional hikers.
Today there are a variety of ways to get to the top of Table Mountain. If planning a day trail isn't your thing, then you can always take the cable car. Details of times and prices can be found on the table mountain website.
Once on the top you can either enjoy the view while having your own picnic or you can enjoy a delicious breakfast or lunch at the table mountain restaurant. There are well marked signs showing the way to the restaurant once you get to the top.
Table Mountain is rich in wild Cape fynbos, certain protected areas of the mountain are listed as World Heritage Sites with an estimated 2,200 species of plants are found on the mountain alone. Animals found on the mountain include the dassie, snakes, spiders, porcupines, mongooses, and tortoises. The last lion on the mountain was shot in 1802. Table Mountain stands at 1,086-meter (3,563-foot) and is made up of sandstone (which is often called Table Mountain Sandstone, TMS) and granite.
To get to the top there are many hikes and trails that can last from two hours up to a 6-8 hour hike. An easier and more comfortable route is to take the cable car to the top!
