The best time for for whale watching in Cape Town is during the winter and spring months. The southern right whale swims up from Antartica to spend the its winter holidays where the waters a warmer than those in the heavily frozen south. The whales can be spotted in False Bay starting from June up untill November mating, calving and generally spending time in their families.
There are strict laws on viewing whales from a boat so it is best to go with a chartered boat who will know what to do and what not to do. For the best boat trips head to Simons Town and to the harbour area in the southern suburbs where trips leave three times a day.
